Glass blowing

Glass blowing

Spent the weekend working with hot glass, here I am using a “jack”, think giant tweezers, to create a line at the bottom of the ornament that eventually will be where the break will occur to take it off the punty. The punty is the metal rod you cannot see that the ornament is attached to and think the glass is coming in at about 2000degrees. Also note the lovely glasses which are good eye protection when working in the flames all day. Ahh a treat to myself, I learned so much, can’t wait to spend a couple of days playing in Romaines well appointed studio.

Nico does the library

Nico spent the day with me yesterday and we baked some cookies and he got a haircut and we went to the library, then we did some studio work, picked up sister at Brownies, had dinner at the Uptown and watched some movies. That was about the half of it, or it felt like that. The best fun was he kept asking to have his photo taken, there are a bunch but this is one of my favorites outside the library.

I was going to post a pic from my last class (for now) in New Jersey. That was until one of my colleagues sat next to me on the plane last night and showed me his pics from his class, set to music, I just couldn’t go forward. I was simply not worthy. Having said that, fun to be home, on a Wednesday, the plane had empty seats from Newark to Atlanta, unheard of. It is still chilly here but I see 70’s coming soon. Got to get busy, lots of projects waiting for their turn. For the marathoners and walkers, I did get a good 45 minute walk this morning with my trusty pal, Tino.

Ways to use the space from a missing tooth

I like to blog with a pic and I had forgotten that I had taken this photo of Izzi this weekend. She popped a mint in her mouth and held it in the space where her tooth is missing. It was just adorable. Not to mention the cute felted flower she had in her hair. Sort of a nostalgic day today. Only one day left in New Jersey. After two years and quite a bit of work, I have met lots of great folks, some a bit more challenged and all working on trying to improve the life of children and families here in their home state. I wish them all the best as I retreat to Florida and other pursuits.

Love how this photo turned out after editing, looks a little like an old masters painting right? A juxtaposition of what was happening. I like to think I am up on things, although I know I am not all that, I still like a newspaper in my hands and a book. If you don’t recognize him, my son is the second from the left. He is part of a weekly podcast about happenings in Jacksonville. I am not sure what the occasion was but while they usually broadcast from the Times-Union, they had a live show at the Burrito Gallery. It was amazingly well attended and the conversation was about Springfield, at least the portion I caught, where we live. Number One up and coming neighborhood according to Southern Living. These are all young men, entrepreneurs and all under 40, well maybe some under 30. What I love the most is that they all care about their community and are about the work of making it a great place to live.

Otto Street

The world is such a strange place, I was walking this morning and as I approached the hospital (Shands Jax), I was talking to my sister on the phone and she was playing with her dog (one of the many) named Otto. I was just walking past Otto Street. I didn’t even know we had an Otto Street. Am I the only one who thinks these little confluences are weird?

CWG rides the Metro

I really have been enjoying the work in DC, it is challenging, I have a great group of colleagues and we zip around the city on the Metro. You know, doing our part to keep down the carbon footprint. Doris is not depicted as she was working tonight. We went to my favorite bookstore, Kramer’s, and restocked books to read and had a great dinner. I am amazed at how good the food is and how many times I had been in that store and did not even know they served food. So I would say folks look happy because we are full, and are going home tomorrow, always the best end to a good work week.

Whose quilt?

I think I mentioned that I found my daughter’s quilt in storage the other day and I threw it on the couch as it needs some mending and cleaning. Apparently Tino thought it was a great find and really doesn’t need any work. Now how am I going to get that quilt fixed up and sent to Texas?

Best Birthday Gift

Well, if you want to rescue a dog and it takes forever and it finally works out on your birthday weekend, that is a great present. Hootie tail is happy to welcome Theo to her territory, don’t know how these girls are going to take it when Tino comes to town.

White Heron Studio?

White Heron Studio?

The story is so long I don’t know where to start. Lets see, I was young, college age, and I was on a sailing trip to a regatta at the Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada. Met someone who was very special, let him get away. At any rate, he remained friends with my dad and came to the 90th birthday party. As a gift he brought my dad the transom from the first A scow he purchased as a donor boat. Apparently dad had helped him find this boat and it made his venture into scow sailing possible. He has kept that transom all these years. So giving it to my dad was a sacrafice and tells me even then I was a good judge of character, what a special guy. Then dad gave me the transom. I am not sure why and I did not consider for one minute not accepting. It has been mounted over my studio door. I believe the karma will be fabulous. This spot may need a rename. I will have to think that over a bit but for the time being, my art place has a very zen like appearance and feel. I am thankful for the small gifts in life,
